Interviews With Cats: King Louis, The Polydactyl Prince!
This week's "Interviews With Cats" features one of our absolutely favorite tabbies - Louis, aka Mittens. He is king of his castle and gets into all kinds of adventures involving ... hawks, lizards, and studying for law school! (or at least "helping" his hu-mom study) - Follow his adorable adventures on Instagram!
Q: Tell us about yourself! Name, nickname, age, city, siblings, etc.
A: My name is Louis, née Mr. Mittens. The shelter called me Mr. Mittens because of my (polydactyl) paws! I was born in August 2014 and have been in my furever home for a little over 2 years now. Before that, I was with Helping Hands Pet Rescue, a rescue that took me in when I was an abandoned one-month-old and with a broken leg. They thought they were going to have to amputate the leg but little baby me didn’t want that and healed up just fine. The wonderful volunteers at Helping Hands nursed me back to health so that my humom could take me home.
Q: Is there a special story behind your name?
A: My humom chose Louis before she even met me, but decided it definitely suited me. Louis is a regal name, and I’m definitely the king (@kinglouisthexvii). Sometimes I go by Mr. Mittens, particularly when I’m being mischievous or causing trouble. Mr. Mittens is my alter ego. Louis isn’t the one who knocks humom’s coffee over or pushes pens off tables; that’s Mr. Mittens.
Q: What’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to you?
A: The most exciting thing to happen to me was probably one of my first days out on my hu-grandparents’ screened-in porch. It was actually pretty scary. A hawk flew at the screen when he saw me sunbathing on the wall and tried to grab me! Luckily, I’m fast and the screen was strong and he didn’t get me!
This is one of my favorite spots on the porch. Just because the hawk scared me that one time doesn’t mean I don’t still love the porch! It is my favorite spot in the hu-grandparents’ house!
Q: Tell us about your best day ever:
A: My best day ever was probably over the summer when I caught a lizard on my hu-grandparents’ porch. Hu-mom says it caught ME by holding on tight to my lip! Hu-gramma locked humom and I on the porch, saying that I was humom’s cat and she had to get the lizard away from me before I could come back in the house. But I’m still pretty sure I caught him and not the other way around.
Q: What's your favorite treat?
A: I am obsessed with Orijen’s freeze-dried cat treats! They’re so tasty and great for playing chase the treat. Humom gives me the Orijen high protein kibble as a snack, too. I like when she hides it around the apartment for me to hunt.
Q: Tell us about a time you got in trouble with your meowmy (or cat dad):
A: One morning, humom was trying to sleep in until an unreasonable 8 AM when I wanted to play. I climbed up on the top ledge of the headboard and dove onto humom’s face. She was not happy. She pulled the sheets up over her head and wouldn’t talk to me for an hour. She was especially mad when she saw I managed to cut her forehead in the process. That was not a great day.
Q: What’s your favorite holiday and why?
A: My favorite holiday is probably Christmas, because there are always a lot of bags, tissue paper, and sparkly things around for me to play with! My humom insisted on dressing me up this year, which I did not like, but I tolerated it because I knew I’d get some treats and tissue paper once she got her pictures.
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
A: When I grow up, I want to be a tiger. Maybe that’s not realistic, but a kitty can dream!
Q: What’s your favorite toy and why?
A: My favorite toys are sparkly puff balls. Humom gets them from craft stores because they come with a ton of sparkly balls in each bag, which is good because I like to bat them under the refrigerator, where humom can’t really reach them. I like to drop them on humom while she’s sleeping. Sometimes it wakes her up and she throws it for me; otherwise, she finds them in the morning and we wake up with play time.
When we moved out of our old apartment, humom found at least 15 sparkly balls under her dresser and another 20 or so under the bed. I was glad to have them back.
Q: Do you have any special talents you’d like to share?
A: I’m very good at catching sparkly balls! Humom tosses them up for me and I jump and catch them either in my mouth or with my (big) paws. It’s pretty cool.
Q: What do you do that annoys your parents?
A: When humom is reading and studying for law school, I like to sit on her books. She doesn’t like doing work, especially when she’d rather be having couch time with me, so I try to give her an excuse to procrastinate. It works a lot of the time! She usually moves me, which is annoying, because I have to keep getting back up on the desk. Sometimes, though, she puts me on her lap and I snuggle in for a nap. I think the purring helps her study.
Q: What’s your favorite color?
A: My favorite sparkly balls are blue and green, so I think those are my favorite colors.
Q: Do you have a best friend? If so, who?
A: I am (reluctantly) best friends with Emory, who is the cat of one of my favorite people. Emory lives down the hall with my human friend, humom’s boyfriend, and they come over to play a lot. Emory and I like to wrestle and play chase. We also like to sunbathe on my cat tree together. Humom says we’re “too stinking cute” when we do that, whatever that means.
My other best friend is Molly, my hugramma’s pomeranian. Hugrandad has a dog, too, but he’s a big fluffy keeshond who scares me (I always make my tail poof when he sneaks up on me). Molly is more my size and we like the same food, so we get along. Molly doesn’t like to wrestle like Emory does. Humom says its because she’s 13, but I don’t think that’s an excuse. I try to get her to wrestle anyway.
Q: Do you have a favorite pastime?
A: My favorite pastime is sitting with humom on the couch. I almost always sit next to the arm of the couch, with my arm on the couch’s arm, like a person. We watch tv or play with yarn (humom says this is “crochet” but I think its more like “fun with string”).
