Interviews With Cats: Carlow The FDNY Cat
This week's Interviews With Cats features Carlow the New York Fire Department cat from Yorkville! Carlow lives in the firehouse and enjoys checking out NYC babes, turkey on special occasions, and of course - napping. He has front row seats to all the adventure the firehouse affords - check out his adventures below!
Q: Tell us about yourself! Name, nickname, age, city, siblings, etc.
A: Hi! My name is Carlow the Firecat. I'm just turned 4 years old and I live and work in a firehouse on the upper east side of Manhattan.
Q: Is there a special story behind your name?
A: When I was just a kitten, I found myself stuck in the tire of an abandoned car on East 115th st. Luckily the firefighters of E22 came to my rescue, and gave me a permanent home. I was named after the local bar frequented by the guys of the firehouse. The Carlow is a half a block from the firehouse.
Q: What’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to you?
A: When I was still a young probie, the front apparatus door was open so I decided to take a walk and explore the great big city I live in. Not noticing that I left, the guys shut the door and went on with their work. A few hours later, my absence was noticed and the search began. Calls were made, signs were made and a search party went out. Two days passed and I was no where to be found. Because I live in such a large populated city, the men of the firehouse assumed they would never see me again. A tiny kitten wandering the streets of Manhattan, looks very suspicious and anybody passing by would be prone to pick it up and take it home. Luckily for me, that's exactly what happened. A lady residing just around the corner from the firehouse saw me within minutes of leaving the firehouse, not knowing where I had come from, and took me in. Days later she saw the sign of the missing firecat and returned me to the firehouse. Front door training with a vicious spray bottle began after that. Now I only wander a few feet from the front door, just to show the pigeons whose territory it is.
Q: Tell us about your best day ever:
A: The best day I have ever had was the day I came to the firehouse. Many little boys grow up dreaming of becoming a fireman and I got sworn in as a probie just as a little kitten. A warm bed, food in the bowl, a roof over my head, and firetrucks under my paws, how lucky am I!?
Q: Tell us about a time you got in trouble with your meowmy (or cat dad):
A: I don't get in trouble, I am the boss. However, there may have been a few times I have been on the table in the kitchen, peed in a gigantic tub of oil absorbent material (in my defense it looked and felt just like litter) and swatted at a visitor or two.
Q: What’s your favorite holiday and why?
A: Firemen don't really care much about holidays. We work days, nights, weekends, and holidays. A firecat works them all. I guess if I had to choose one, I would pick the one in which I get turkey meat in my bowl. Which one is that? Firecat day? Every day should be firecat day.
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?
A: At four years old, I already am a grown-up and I'm already living the dream; a firecat on the Upper Eastside in the greatest city in the world. Not to mention, a great pension and benefits.
Q: What’s your favorite toy and why?
A: My favorite toy would be the tires on the fire trucks. A great scratching post and they never swat back.
Q: Do you have any special talents you’d like to share?
A: My talents include climbing firetrucks, chasing away pigeons, and bossing the probies around. I'm also really good at napping. If it were an Olympic sport, I'd get a gold medal.
Q: What do you do that annoys your parents?
A: Around the firehouse I pretty much keep to myself, rarely getting in anyone's business to annoy them. Some guys in the firehouse just aren't cat people, so it's likely just my presence could annoy them, but I just stay away from those losers.
Q: What’s your favorite color?
A: My favorite color is firetruck red. Duh.
Q: Do you have a best friend? If so, who?
A: I am my own best friend. Though there is one guy in the firehouse that favors me more than others. I wouldn't say we're best friends per say but he always makes sure my litter box is clean and plays with me more than anyone else.
Q: Do you have a favorite pastime?
A: My favorite pastime would probably be listening to the scanner for jobs around the city. I also really enjoy sitting at the door and watching the busy people of New York walk by. This city is filled with beautiful girls. Meeee-owww.
