Giant Cat To Take Over Times Square In February
... Well he's only giant because he'll be projected on ALL the billboards in Times Square for 3 minutes each night (between 11:57 PM and midnight). It's part of an art project called Midnight Moment which features "synchronized, cutting-edge creative content on electronic billboards and newspaper kiosks throughout Times Square every night."
The video is by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, originally commissioned in 2001 for another Times Square exhibit. Peter says of the cat, "There was just something super-nice about this cat that we were attracted to."
It's an interesting juxtaposition between the constant bustle of Times Square and this cat whose sole focus is enjoying his saucer of milk.
Per YouTube description:
Given that this public space [Times Square] is usually reserved for slick commercials and news programming, it was an incongruous setting for a video of a cat deciding to pause for something to drink. While the lush, high-definition quality of the Büsi video suggests a commercial for a pet product, the lack of a soundtrack, deliberate overexposure, and slapdash framing give the work the look of an amateur video of a family pet. By simply changing the frame of reference, by restaging the commonplace within the landscape of art and/or commerce, Fischli and Weiss make the ordinary seem extraordinary.
