We're pumped today to present a Q&A with Mitchell Lacsamama, creator and designer of Spunk Cat t-shirts! You can never have too many cat themed clothing items, so read our interview below and check out the Spunk Cat shop!

That Cat Blog:Tell us about yourself and your background. How did Spunk Cat start? Tell us about the “lightbulb moment.”

Mitchell Lacsamama: I am a contributor to the corporate America workflow by day and am a creator and inventor by night. Spunk Cat began as a parallel passion to fashion and clothing, it was to be a casual endeavor to learn the ins and outs of designing and printing on apparel. There was no lightbulb moment, for me it was more of all the pieces coming together and unraveling in front of me in real time. When I finally saw the bigger picture coming into play, I looked at what Spunk Cat could be more seriously and aligned my visions accordingly.

TCB:What is the Spunk Cat philosophy / goal?

ML: The goal for Spunk Cat is to create pieces that when seen, will incite a very genuine, raw emotion. That emotion can be excitement, confusion, intrigue, and even hate, as long as it’s presented itself to someone and it had stood out enough to incite and provoke a feeling - then that piece would have done what was intended.

Aptly named, another goal we have is to have pieces that are timeless, and then have those that aren’t. I want to be able to address modern day societal problems in a fun yet bold kind of way that I can get away with without being too risque or taboo, seeing as the perspective of the clothes is through that of an animal.

TCB:Do you have any background in apparel or is this a totally ground up operation?

ML: This is a completely ground up operation, I am learning everything I need to as I go, and rest assured I won’t be stopping! I am also the creative director and co-founder of another private label brand - Tumflon - as well so I’m getting a lot of reps in.

TCB: Where are you based out of?

ML: New Brunswick New Jersey, or as well all call it, the “Hub City.”

TCB: Where does your design inspiration come from?

ML: Inspiration for new designs, new graphics, and anything Spunk Cat stem from my personal contemporary tastes, along with things that inspire me about this city, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Hip hop is another outlet that I draw inspiration from, a lot in part due to the raw, gritty, storytelling convention that Hip Hop has been accustomed to since its birth.

TCB: Tell us about your process, from idea to execution. How much time goes into creating one individual piece?

ML: Ideas for me have to be put through this physical incubation period on my notepad in order for me to be comfortable enough to see it come to life. An idea to actuality can be as quick as two days to [longer, such as] whole weeks.

TCB: How long has Spunk Cat been around?

ML: Spunk Cat has been around since the start of this year!

TCB: Where do you sell your work? Only online or do you ever do craft/street fairs or vendor markets?

ML: I sell my work through the Spunk Cat website, as well as at local pop-up shops, and really anywhere I feel like it. For instance, I hook up the corner bodega store with a new product to hang up behind the register each week to see what plays and what doesn’t.

TCB:Do you have any cool/funny cat related stories?

ML: Way too many with my cat Storm, but I’ll tell them over at the other interview page [ed's note: Interview coming soon!].

TCB:What's the most rewarding part of the whole process for you?

ML: Seeing the faces of people seeing Spunk Cat shirts for the first time ever, you can tell they really haven’t seen anything like this.

TCB: What are your aspirations for the Spunk Cat brand? What's next? Anything new and exclusive we can share?

ML: My aspirations for the brand knows no bounds. I want to make a statement - I want to make it boldly. I want to collaborate with other brands. I want to incite emotion. I want the garments to be produced top to bottom in house - so much to this vision the list won’t end!

As for what’s to come for Spunk Cat this Spring/Summer season, we’ve got a lot of styles being concocted as I write this. We’re going to release more different types of clothing/products, and we are currently collaborating with an ambitious local talent for a reconcepted lookbook of the season!

TCB:Anything else you’d like us to know?

ML: A portion of the profits will be donated to no-kill animal shelters (we don’t advertise that because we want people to purchase our product off of instinct without added value, they’ll unknowingly be chipping into the cause!)
